Medical Malpractice and Trigeminal Neuralgia: An Analysis of 49 Cases

Purpose Our study fills the vacancy of litigation research related to trigeminal neuralgia management, giving health care providers information needed understand potential litigious outcomes that follow treatment methods. Methods We queried Westlaw database identify cases management. Key variables extracted included medical complaints, trial outcomes, and demographics. Continuous were compared between in favor defendant plaintiff using t-test or Wilcoxon rank sum test. Categorial χ2 Fisher exact Results About 49 met inclusion criteria—for those surgical complications (42.9%) cited as most common reasons for malpractice claims. Cranial nerve deficits (34.7%) frequent postoperative complaints. Verdicts ruled 26.5% with a mean payout $1,982,428.46. Dentists cases, 63.3%, average was $415,908, whereas neurosurgeons involved 20.4% an $618,775. Cases verdicts more likely be older than (P = .03). Conclusions Over one-half resulted reason litigation. Dentistry individual clinical specialty defendants, neurosurgery contributed largest based on (for n > 1). These analyses may help doctor teams management have informed discussion patient at every visit so such litigations avoided.
